What is activated carbon (charcoal) and why is it specifically used in filters? What is the difference between Charcoal and Activated Charcoal? Activated charcoal has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of small pores between the carbon atoms. Special manufacturing techniques have been used and this results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of approximately 300-1900 square meters per gram. These active charcoals are used to adsorb odorous or colored substances from a wide variety of liquids and gases alike. The importance here is absorption. When a material adsorbs something, it attaches to it by a specific chemical attraction. The immense surface area of activated charcoal gives it countless bonding opportunities. When certain chemicals pass close to the carbons surface, they get attached to it and are not allowed to pass any further. Activated charcoal is good at capturing certain carbon-based impurities and is also actively used to capture chemicals like chlorine.

What is granulated activated carbon (GAC) and what is its main purpose?
Granular activated carbon (GAC) has a huge surface area resulting from its extreme porous structure. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filters effectiveness depends on the flow rate and contact time with the water. If the flow rate is very high their efficiency could drop to as low as 0% but if the flow rate is slow their efficiency can even exceed those of various different carbon forms.
What are the advantages of GAC vs. other form of carbon?
For its primary function of taste, odour and chemical reduction GAC is cheaper, very effective and can be re-used.

Description
Surface Filters (Pleated Filters) are made in a thin sheet so that only the surface captures sediment particles. These are known in the market place as “pleated filters” because of their accordion shaped pleated structure. The way the pleats are arranged gives the filter alot more surface area than normal polypropylene filters. One of their great advantages of a good pleated filter is that they are washable and reusable, more often in larger than smaller micron sizes.
To compare:
Polypropylene filters have more dirt holding capacity, and they are usually more effective if a variety of particle sediment sizes are being filtered at the same time. Pleated filters have a much larger surface area and therefore it has more capacity for filtering particles of the same size. It is also easier to manufacture pleated filters to a specific micron size other than its counter part the polypropylene filter. As stated, they can also be cleaned and reused. Pleated filters can make up for the lack of depth by providing a much larger filter surface area.
Which is the Best Sediment Filter to use?
The longest lasting most effective sediment filters use pleated polypropylene or cellulose and polyester, while inexpensive sediment filters use a wound or spun mesh nylon. Due to their larger surface area and low water resistance, Pleated Filters result in a low water pressure drop while providing higher flow rates and much greater filtration capacity than spun or string wound filters. Good Quality Pleated Filters can often be cleaned and re-used.
